Itinerary Woods Hole, a village on Cape Cod, is a world center for research, education, and training in marine, biomedical, and environmental science. It is home to two large private organizations, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), and the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) and two federal government facilities, the National Marine Fisheries Service and the U.S. Geological Survey. Several smaller science-related organizations are based in Woods Hole as well.
Participants will visit WHOI, the MBL, and the Woods Hole Science Aquarium operated by the National Marine Fisheries Service. The visit to WHOI will include a talk on current research given by a prominent scientist and information about the status of a major upgrade of the submersible Alvin. At the MBL, the group will learn how a wide variety of marine organisms are used in basic biological research. There will be time to explore the Exhibit Centers and gift shops at both WHOI and the MBL. The visit to the Aquarium will allow participants to immerse themselves in the history of fishing and recent discoveries in fisheries research, while meeting live local fish on a face-to-fin basis.
Participants should wear comfortable shoes for walking between institutions. A sweater or light-weight jacket is advisable at this time of year. In addition, a photo ID may be required for admission into the Aquarium. A boxed lunch will be provided and is included in the cost of the trip.
