MME 2004 Conference: ISLANDS of LIFE

On Saturday, May 1, 2004, Mass Marine Educators and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) invite you to a special day of cutting-edge research and hands-on marine science education focused on the theme "Islands of Life." Within the world's oceans are unexpected, sometimes startling habitats -- coral reefs, seamounts, and hydrothermal vents, to name a few -- that harbor delicately balanced ecosystems created by particular physical and chemical conditions and set apart from their surroundings. These "Islands of Life" are often home to creatures that exist nowhere else on earth and are exciting and complex areas of scientific study.

The morning kicks off with a brief keynote by a WHOI scientist to highlight the Islands of Life theme. This address will be followed by presentations by three leading marine scientists about their latest research findings on such hot topics as thermal vents, sea mounts, coral reefs, marine protected areas or coastal ecosystems. In afternoon breakout sessions, three master educators will lead hands-on workshops to show how to apply the morning's information directly in your classroom. Selected lab tours and short field trips may be offered depending on availability and interest. Watch this web site for late breaking developments!
